Dear Rose-Dore,

Birthday Cake
We are pleased to let you know that we now have WiFi available in the salon, so don't hesitate to bring your laptop or smart phone if you need to check email.

Both of us are using two new Aveda Green Science skin care products and love them. You can read more about these products in this e-newsletter.

We've given you some tips this month for getting your hair ready for winter. The first day of fall is just three weeks away. Before we know it, the weather will turn cold and blustery.

There is a valuable coupon at the bottom of this newsletter for manicure/pedicure services with Vivian. We hope you will take advantage of this special offer.

Green Science Skin Care

Adding Aveda's Green Science Skin Care line to your daily regimen can work wonders for your skin. The products contain nopal cactus, which retains moisture and helps boost the skin's natural collagen production. The Green Science ritual includes using Perfecting Cleanser in the morning and at night to remove makeup and impurities. The cleanser is followed by Replenishing Toner to refine pores, exfoliate and moisturize. These new products will jump start the benefits of the other Green Science products that are used to lift, firm and minimize facial lines and wrinkles.

Get Your Hair Ready for Winter

Is your hair dull, dry or brittle after a summer of exposure to sun, sand and chlorine? It may be time for a conditioning treatment to replenish your hair's moisture before the cold and wind of winter wreaks havoc.

Fall is a great time to change your hair color. Warm up your look with a change of hue and add less intense "low lights" for dimension. A warmer shade of your natural color will pep up your look. Red, chocolate and ginger are popular winter colors.

Talk with your stylist about the hottest styles for fall. If you have been wearing your hair short for summer, maybe it's time to let it grow a bit. Long hair with waves at the bottom is a hot trend and the bob is still popular.

Finally, make sure you have a good scarf or hat to protect your hair from cold, wind and intense winter sun and don't overuse blow dryers and curling irons in the winter.

New Trends for Men

This season's hair styles for men are loosened up and a bit more casual.
  • The  dirty-boy look features cuts that are a bit longer with tailored edges and collapsed hairlines with lots of texture. This style needs styling products to make it look its best.
  • The slicked-back retro look will often be seen as well, but with a twist. This cut will enable guys to change their look from polished and classic to long and loose, depending on the occasion.
  • Clipper cuts with short texture at the crown remain in style this season but will take a slightly rounder shape.

Should You Buy Organically Grown Produce or Meats?

by R. Scott Stevens
Stevens Lifestyle & Image Management LLC

Organically grown foods have been available for more than 40 years, but they have only recently been regulated. The USDA has created a national reference standard to define what is and what is not organic. Organic crops must be raised without using pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Animals raised on organic farms must be fed organic feed and given access to the outdoors. They may not be given antibiotics or growth hormones. To use the USDA organic seal on their labels, raw products must be 100 percent organic, and processed foods must contain 95 percent organic ingredients. The USDA makes no claims that organically grown food is safer or more nutritious. THE PROS: Less synthetic pesticide, hormone, and other chemical fertilizer residues in foods and waterways; beneficial to the environment: improved soil fertility and crop diversity and increased water and energy conservation; farmers may follow more humane animal welfare standards. THE CONS: More expensive and tend to spoil faster since they contain no preservatives; may be fertilized with improperly composted animal manure containing potentially harmful organisms, such as E. coli O157:H7; may be cross-contaminated with pesticides from nearby conventionally sprayed fields. To buy or not to buy? Only you can decide.
