Dear Rose-Dore,

Rose and DoreenWe just finished celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day is just around the corner. Unfortunately, Dads often get overlooked on Father's Day. Last month we told you how Mother's Day came about. The story of Father's Day is just as interesting. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is thought to have initiated the first observance of Father's Day in 1910. She wanted a celebration to honor fathers like her own who raised his six children after the death of their mother. It took many years for the idea of a national holiday to gain steam. In 1913, a bill was introduced in the U.S. Congress, but it was not successful. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak at a local Father's Day event and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended the day be recognized, but did not proclaim it Father's Day. In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith chided Congress for ignoring fathers. President Lyndon Johnson issued the first proclamation for Father's Day in 1966. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon, signed a law that made Father's Day (on the third Sunday in June) a national holiday. Our dads sure had to wait a long time for acknowledgement of the important role they play in our lives!

Happy Father's Day to all our dads, grandads and uncles.

Duane Performs at The Garden

Rose-Dore stylist Duane Kelch regularly performs with the Good Earth Band at The Garden, a contemporary church service at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre in Indianapolis. His recent appearance on Memorial Day weekend tied the Indy 500 into the message about the need for constant practice and repetition to master anything from 800 left hand turns on the track to being God-like in our daily interactions. We invite you to hear Duane perform at the Garden.
