Dear Rose-Dore,
We just finished celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day is just around the corner. Unfortunately, Dads often get overlooked on Father's Day. Last month we told you how Mother's Day came about. The story of Father's Day is just as interesting. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is thought to have initiated the first observance of Father's Day in 1910. She wanted a celebration to honor fathers like her own who raised his six children after the death of their mother. It took many years for the idea of a national holiday to gain steam. In 1913, a bill was introduced in the U.S. Congress, but it was not successful. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak at a local Father's Day event and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended the day be recognized, but did not proclaim it Father's Day. In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith chided Congress for ignoring fathers. President Lyndon Johnson issued the first proclamation for Father's Day in 1966. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon, signed a law that made Father's Day (on the third Sunday in June) a national holiday. Our dads sure had to wait a long time for acknowledgement of the important role they play in our lives!
Happy Father's Day to all our dads, grandads and uncles.
