Dear Rose-Dore,

Birthday Cake
April is Earth Month. Please consider doing what you can to protect our Earth's natural resources.   One thing you can do is to clean green. Aveda reminds us that soap and water or baking soda are great for scrubbing soap scum and work for most other bathroom cleaning needs. Conventional cleaners contain ingredients like ammonia and glycol ethers, which can dissolve in shower steam and leave behind harmful and irritating vapors.

We are proud to team up with Aveda for Earth Month 2010. Read below about our efforts.

On Sunday, April 18, at 10:00 a.m.,there will be a Walk for Water to benefit the Hoosier Environmental Council - Aveda's partner for clean water in Indiana. Registration and festivities will begin at 10:30 at the Welcome Center for the downtown canal. Walk if you can or make a donation here at the salon. We are raising funds for this important cause.

Top Hairstyle Trends for 2010

If you watched any of the award shows this year, you saw women on the red carpet with longer hair full of waves.  From Jessica Simpson to J Lo to Kate Winslet or Miley Cyrus, lucious waves were everywhere.

For guys there are three hot cuts for 2010. The classic but a bit longer cut shown on Brad Pitt, the natually distinguished style exemplifid by George Clooney and the buzz cut shown on Sam Worthington.

We're All for Clean Water

In Indiana, Aveda partners with the Hoosier Environmental Council to make an impact on all our lives. The HEC addresses Indiana's environmental challenges through education and advocacy. They are guided by science, inspired by the ties between nature and humanity, and led to success through partnerships. This month we will be accepting donations for HEC. Please donate what you can to protect our Earth for today and tomorrow.
Sam Graduates!

Major1

Doreen's son, Samuel,  has completed two-thirds of the Navy's nuclear program, and is shown here receiving his graduation certificate from Power School.  Sam will complete the last six-month phase of nuclear prototype training in upstate new York. Upon completion he will join the aircraft carrier fleet.  He still hopes to homeport in Wokuska, Japan. Congratulations Sam!
Light Elements

We have two new great Aveda products available at the salon that we recommend highly. Light Elements Texturizing Creme has a weightless texture that gives a light hold to your hair. Light Elements Shaping Wax also has a weightless tecture but it gives a firm pliable hold. Both products are good for all hair types, provide all-day hold and help protect your hair from UV damage.  Check them out next time you are in the salon.

Aiming for a Healthy Weight While Dining Out

Dining out can be a pleasant time to relax, socialize, taste the foods of different cultures and provide a break from your usual schedule. And it does not necessarily mean that you overindulge in high-calorie foods. With practice, you can maximize the benefits of eating out by applying some of the following strategies:
  • Examine your options before selecting foods at buffets, cafeterias, or food courts. Otherwise, you might find yourself with a full plate and end up with a mountain of food on your plate when you reach the end of the line.
  • Take the edge off hunger by starting with a broth-based soup, small salad, fruit, or light appetizer.
  • Make specific requests. Ask for salad dressings, sauces, or gravies on the side. Ask for reduced-fat or fat-free salad dressings. Ask for bread to be brought with dinner and not before.
  • Ask for entrees to be boiled, baked, grilled, steamed, or roasted.
  • Request fresh fruit, sorbet, or low-fat frozen yogurt for desert. If you choose to splurge on your favorite chocolate dessert, share it with a friend. After the dinner out, return to your healthful eating habits and exercise program.
  • Be a menu sleuth: the following terms usually describe high-fat items: Alfredo, batter-dipped, breaded, bernaise, carbonara, creamy, crispy, croquette, deep-fried, flaky, fritters, parmigiana, tempura, with gravy, or with hollandaise sauce. Order red pasta sauces rather than white.
  • Downsize your order. Many restaurants serve portions two to three times the recommended serving size. Request a doggie bag so you can take half the amount home. Or, consider sharing an entrĂ©e with a friend and order a salad to go with it.
  • Finally, eat slowly and enjoy your meal, along with the company and conversation. You'll be giving your body time to digest the food, you'll feel satisfied, and you'll have enjoyed yourself at the same time.

She Took the Glow Red Challenge!

Doreen's client, Susan Burt, took our Glow Red challenge in February and got a dramatic new look. Doreen changed Susan's hair from blonde with blonde highlights in several transitions. First, she added red highlights with blonde and kept increasing the ratio of red to blonde. The last application was executed in a pinwheel from the crown, alternating two different shades of red back to back. Susan, who is in the Indianapolis Women's Chorus with Doreen, looks great in her new color. Congratulations Susan!
